about

In December 2005 my son was born, 6 months later I wrote this song, "Family Tree".

This song features Kyle "The Vagrant" Conwell once again on guitars, revived from the archives, circa 1998...the song can be described in a few words: family, friends, loyalty, strength, love, maturity, growth...I touch upon the birth of my son, all the way back to the abandonment from my biological father. It was originally called "Fatherhood".

Over these 3 and half decades, I've come to realize a few things about myself growing up, things I can't change but I own up to. I haven't always been the best son or brother growing up, I went astray and complicated a lot of things. I've been a horrible friend at times and even the worst enemy to some of my best friends. I'm still learning everyday how to be a father and a husband, and even now I ef up big from time to time but I thank everyone for sticking with me.

What I do know is that we as people don't really change, we don't become a new person. We adapt, we learn, we grow and we alter our directions based off of the past, good and bad experiences. From those times, we don't become new people, we become better people, smarter, closer, more loyal, loving and caring.

Live and learn right? I've lived, learned and I've adapted but I haven't changed; I've grown and I've applied these lessons to my present day in hopes of a better future. I've become a better version of myself and surround myself with even greater people. I've got a beautiful family and still have the best of friends. And even still, through all the mistakes, trials and errors, at the end of the day, I'm a better Matt, a better man, a better family man and a better motherfucker all around. This song is for my family and friends.

Enjoy motherfuckers.

lyrics

My seed, planted, roots, stab into her planet
Time to walk upright, steady feet understand it
I brand it with one name, perfection God planned it
Connection etched in blood, next stage, page one...

The rise of a new son I fatherhood movement
Every stone along the run, I step toward improvement
You’d have never seen it comin’ one blink my wings hummin’
From inside a dim mind, light heart, heavy summon

The beat I keep drummin’ hold the rhythm to my family
I’ve got to walk upright so that my feet understand me
Forward is the energy I keep my soul grounded
Now my spirit unlimited, satellite unbounded

I’ve found it; my window open wide let the sound in
Profound it... keeps my rough edges well rounded
Surrounded, by love I hold good folks around him
My roots dig deep so that my feet will always ground him

HOOK/VERSE
It’s difficult you say trying to stand alone
Trying to walk without a guide no hand to lend you home
I’d like to think I pave the way with every hand I own
And every step that I may take is hope to land me home

But if I sigh before I die and never wake from where I lie
Hopefully that will me to me my life is satisfied
That I’ve grown old and known to show my blood will not divide
From seed to seed we generate this family with pride

But know the ledge my bio fathers line will end with me
A new dawn for my name my son will carry me
His mother my drive the reason I survive
The push that rises every sun for wake to see my eyes

Like Gemini’s > a pair for both sides
Unpaved cornerstone homegrown ties
The roots the veins the presence and the pain
The blood the essence the family and the name

The vine’s so thin life dangles on a limb
Careful is the path of walk of life until the end
But how do we begin when my line of blood is scarred
From preceding generations family trees have no regard

My mother is my blood; my step father’s my direction
My brothers are my life wife and son is my reflection
My family is my podium I always stand behind them
Looking out beyond my circle love will always find them

Dedicated, the times will always bind them
American family multi cultures blind the mind then
I feel as if my duties represent to walk the line for them
Just to remind them who I am

I am a son a brother a father and a husband
A friend that sometimes went away but still knows how it was then
Imperfect, habitual, but still I know perfection
I am a man family my blood is my reflection

HOOK/VERSE

Well here it is ma, I’ve planted my own verse now
Roots to the soil to the earth to the birth now
Who’s watching I gotta walk upright now
Three decades on the planet as of right now

Light house I am the beacon
The satellite sight home sweet home seekin’
I can see it now I read it from the tree and cloud
Perfect combination for the sun and earth feed it now

I lead it now her foot prints beside me
Perfect combination for the sun and earth to guide me
Hopefully I hold the rhythm given to provide me
The perfect combination of the blood and love inside me

I see clear within perspective
Clear to see the trail is rough, raw and respective
Unpaved cornerstone grown
Roots to soil to the earth I’m home
